Wine sales are down in France, even if whites and sparkling wines are gaining favor with the French, to the detriment of reds.
VIt has been a few years since wine sales have been falling in France. The confinements linked to the health crisis had however stabilized the trend, closing bars and restaurants requires. But the figures for 2021, reported by BFMTV, confirm that the French are buying less and less of their supposedly favorite drink. An observation to be nuanced, however, because certain types of wine are, on the contrary, meeting with growing success. Thus, if we buy less red, we now prefer white and sparkling.
Between 2020 and 2021, sales of still wine fell by 5% in volume, FranceAgriMer reports, drawing on data from panelist IRI. If we focus on sales of red wine in 2021, it is even a fall of 6.2% which is recorded compared to the average of sales in supermarkets from 2016 to 2020. Sales of rosés, as for to them, which tended to increase in recent years, remained stable last year.
We buy less, but more expensive
On the other hand, on the white side, sales increased by 3% in volume over the same period. Sign of a growing affinity of the French for these wines, even if it means abandoning the reds. But the increase in sales of sparkling wines is even more significant: from 2020 to 2021, they increased by no less than 8%. A new predilection which therefore goes against the consumption of all so-called “still” wines (non-sparkling).

Note however that if the French buy less wine in volume, they tend to buy more and more expensive wine. Thus, if we count in value and not in quantity, sales of still wines only dropped by 1% in 2021 compared to the previous year. This tendency to consume more expensively therefore makes it possible for the moment to cushion the stall for vine professionals.
