Has the “end of abundance” also sounded for Breton students? In any case, according to them, we eat less well and for more in university restaurants. The fault of new pricing and a reform of the Crous Bretagne menus. The choices have been restricted and certain foodstuffs are now to be paid for in addition. The second piece of bread, for example, or the butter – which remains salty despite everything, the institution having not pushed the heresy to the point of imposing soft butter.
The students fight back
Last June, the new director of the Crous announced it: to cope with inflation and tensions over the supply of certain foods, the RU and cafet’ of Breton higher establishments would have to tighten their belts. Just before the summer, the Board of Directors therefore adopted a revised menu and revised rates. Result: since the start of the school year, the students have been fighting back. Selected excerpts from the guestbook of one of the restaurants in Rennes 2: “Where did our favorite meals go? » ; “Not enough choice”; “The students are hungry! »
For dessert, no way to take two fruits without paying extra. It is a fruit and a compote. And in addition, to eat it, you have to pay for the little wooden spoon!
“They try to save money everywhere and we end up with an accumulation of absurd little things”, denounces Gwénolé Bourrée, elected representative of the Pirate Union, student union. In the cafeterias, he explains, the €3.30 menu only leaves the choice between two sandwiches. It was four before. The one that had the most success, with chicken, was taken out of the formula and now costs… €5. “And for dessert, there’s no way to have two pieces of fruit without paying extra. It is a fruit and a compote. And in addition, to eat it, you have to pay for the little wooden spoon! »
Have your elected Union Pirates at the CROUS opposed body and soul to this pricing policy aimed at passing inflation on to students and staff?

0.50 € the rebate of bread
In university restaurants, students could previously choose two starters or two desserts in addition to the main course. From now on, it is a classic “starter – main course – dessert”. Don’t go out of your way or go to the checkout: €0.60 for the second starter, €0.30 for an additional fruit, €0.50 for a spare bread… The menus also offer less meat and fish. “The other day, the main course was a vegetarian hamburger: semolina and zucchini between two breads, with a salad on the side”, describes Ulysse David, elected member of the FAHB, another student organization. “Being vegetarian is very good, but it still has to be consistent…”
In residences, charges up 4%
The €1 meals for scholarship holders, set up during the health crisis, have been maintained. With a new constraint: no more question of having two meals at once. “Some bought two sandwiches at noon and kept the other one for the evening”, underlines Ulysse. “Now they can only have the second meal after 6 p.m., in the only RU of Rennes still open at that time. »
It is not up to the students to pay for the fact that the State does not give more resources to the Crous
Unacceptable for the Pirate Union, which ensures that the monthly additional cost can amount to several tens of euros for some young people. “It is not up to the students to pay for the fact that the State does not give more resources to the Crous. Especially since the management, for the same reasons, has also increased the charges in student residences by 4%. “The increase in scholarships represents only €6 more per month at level 1 and does not cover inflation”, denounces Thaïs Danel, another union representative. The organization even seized the administrative court, to send the decision of the board of directors back to the kitchen.
