By 2023, the best-selling car on the planet could be an electric one! According to Elon Musk, the Model Y is already the most profitable.
Worldwide, the electric car still represents less than one in ten sales. However, by 2023, the best-selling vehicle on the planet could well be a 100% electric model. The Tesla Model Y could steal this place from a Toyota. Note that in 2021, it was no longer the Corolla that was in the lead, but the RAV4.
The Japanese firm sold 1.13 million copies of its SUV last year. The Model Y is still far from this level… but it is progressing at lightning speed. This increase follows the brand’s production capacities.
These jump in 2022 with the commissioning of the Berlin factory (Germany), which precisely produces Model Ys. Between the addition of a site and the improvement of the rates on the others, Elon Musk thinks it can have the capacity to produce two million vehicles a year from the end of 2022.

Of the two million vehicles that are planned for 2023, a good half should be Model Y. The SUV is therefore capable of coming to compete for first place in the ranking with the Toyotas… if all goes well. This year, for example, Tesla’s production was disrupted by health measures in China.
If Tesla succeeds, it must be recognized that it would be quite crazy. We would have a manufacturer who manages to place a model at the top of the ranking of vehicles in the world, which is moreover an electric one, 15 years after the launch of its first product.
According to Elon Musk, the Model Y will even become the first model in terms of turnover this year, its average price being much higher than that of a Corolla. For example, it is around €60,000 in France.
