The BMW i4 goes downmarket with a price set to counter the Tesla Model 3

With its new eDrive35 version, the i4 is displayed from €53,550, the price of the entry-level Tesla Model 3.

New basic version for the i4, the electric version of the 4 Series Gran Coupé. The eDrive35 receives a motor, placed on the rear axle, with a power of 210 kW, or 286 hp. As a reminder, the eDrive40 placed above announces 340 hp. If the block is “deflated”, the performance remains good, with a 0 to 100 km / h dispatched in 6 seconds.

The change is more marked on the battery side. Net capacity increases from 80.7 to 68.0 kWh. Logically, autonomy drops. While it is 590 km with the 40, the 35 can do 483 km on a full charge according to the WLTP mixed cycle. The model limits breakage with the basic version of smaller 17-inch rims.

On the charging side, it is up to 11 kW in alternating current and 180 kW in direct current. The standard equipment includes LED headlights and lights, the set of curved screens with navigation, the reversing camera and the heat pump.

The price is €53,550. Or €60 more than the base price of the Tesla Model 3, which has fairly similar characteristics, with a 0 to 100 km/h achieved in 6.1 seconds and 491 km of autonomy. The American has a fast charge of 170 kW max. It takes advantage of the network of Superchargers, whose prices have risen. Opposite, the BMW offers one year of charging on the Ionity network.

We feel that the Tesla is the target to shoot down, because the i4 has a lower base price than the new electric X1, which is more compact and which announces 439 km of autonomy. Faced with the Model 3, the i4 also advances better manufacturing quality and a more developed BMW network for after-sales service.

We also note that the price of this variant can make you hesitate in the face of more general models. Thus, the Kia EV6 propulsion 229 hp with 77.4 kWh battery and autonomy of 528 km starts at 51,990 €!
