That’s it, the Tesla Model Y becomes the best-selling new car in Europe

Tesla has just achieved a great feat: the Model Y is the best-selling new car in Europe in September 2022. A first for the brand’s electric SUV, which could well become the best-selling car in the world in 2023 .

Tesla does not stop chaining the records. If in the first half of the year, the Model Y was the best-selling electric car in Europe, in September 2022, a new record has just fallen. According to consultancy JATO, Tesla’s electric SUV is indeed the best-selling car, all engines combined ! It therefore allows itself to steal the show from the Peugeot 208 (electric and thermal) and Dacia Sandero (thermal) which complete the podium.

However, this is not the first time that an electric car has been the best-selling car of the month in Europe. Indeed, Tesla’s Model 3 has already had this honor, in particular in May 2022 when it already stood up to the Peugeot 208 (thermal and electric). But the position of the Model Y should strengthen on the European and global market.

Tesla Model Y: best-selling car of the year 2023?

Elon Musk is convinced that the Model Y will be the best-selling car of the year 2023 in the world, and the billionaire could not be wrong. Indeed, the Tesla Model Y has become the best-selling electric car in the world in August 2022. The American manufacturer is promoting its electric SUV in many countries, including in France where it is cheaper than the Model 3.

Tesla factories are running at full speed and increasing their production rate day by day. The American manufacturer could indeed approach 1.5 million cars produced in 2022 and exceed 2 million in 2023.

Tesla already dominates Europe

In Europe, in September 2022, the Model Y sold 29,367 units, compared to 12,244 for the Model 3 and 6,527 units for the Volkswagen ID.4. Cumulated over the year, the Tesla Model Y is found at 83,277 copies, compared to the 56,185 Model 3 that were sold. In third place, the Fiat 500 is at 46,938 units, almost two times less than the Tesla Model Y, which is sold for much more.

The Volkswagen ID.4 has remained on the cumulative sales podium since January 2022, just ahead of its cousin, the Skoda Enyaq iV, which shares the same platform. If we compare with the cumulative figures between January and August, the Model Y has made a huge leap.

In terms of market share, in Europe, new electric cars accounted for 24% of new registrations, compared to 17% for diesel and 56% for gasoline. In France, electric cars have exceeded diesel cars, in terms of registration, since September.
