Elon Musk has just unveiled a new feature of his future pickup. This one will be amphibious.
On the sidelines of the presentation of Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, Elon Musk wanted to take stock of the brand’s pickup, the Cybertruck. While it is expected on the roads for 2023, the boss of the brand has unveiled one of its new features: its ability to immerse and resist water. Indeed, Elon Musk explains that the “ Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes and even seas that are not too rough. »
The Tesla boss doubled down on that comment with a clarification, adding that his pickup should be able to ” connect Starbase to South Padre Island, crossing the channel “. For those uninitiated in Texan geography, it is a crossing of about ten kilometers through a lagoon. The Cybertruck is not the first vehicle of its type to boast water crossing skills. Crossing fords and small rivers are the prerogative of some high-on-wheel pickups like the Jeep Wrangler, but in all likelihood, Elon Musk sees further with his future vehicle. The amphibious capabilities the Tesla boss describes would involve specific modifications to the Cybertruck. Indeed, in the case of a conventional crossing, the wheels remain in contact with the ground. However, if it is a question of crossing a calm sea, the Cybertruck will necessarily have to adapt its operation.
It’s not the Cybertruck that takes to the sea…
The announcement of this feature is certainly a surprise, but above all an additional element that will make the Cybertruck a vehicle apart, including compared to the competition. Indeed, the electric behemoths of the segment are called Ford F-150 Lightning and, for a few weeks, Rivian R1T. If they have solid arguments, neither can claim such an ambitious amphibious mode.
In the end, this announcement raises a final question: was this feature planned for a long time and kept secret or is it a last minute request from Elon Musk? Depending on whether it is the first or the second option, the arrival on the roads of the pick-up could either respect its marketing schedule, or call it into question. Indeed, despite its central role in the brand’s strategy, the Cybertruck has already been delayed several times and if it is established that its design is finished, it has just been doubled by two other projects dear to Elon Musk: Optimus, and the Semi.
