In recent years, Tesla has established itself as one of the most well-known automotive brands, mainly due to its amazing range of electric vehicles, which are no different from other consumer electronics (think “over -the-air”).
The name of the car manufacturer was inspired by the famous Serbian-American engineer and physicist Nikola Tesla, and it is generally accepted that the company’s emblem is a stylized letter T which represents both the scientist and the name of the company. However, as we will see in the next few paragraphs, the meaning of the Tesla logo goes far beyond that. Keep reading.
Is Elon Musk a founding member?
Elon Musk, the chairman and CEO of Tesla, is the public face of the company, and it’s hard to imagine the automaker operating without him. Yet that was precisely the situation when Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning founded the company in 2003 as Tesla Motors.
In 2004, Musk led the company’s first seed round, and he also invested in subsequent seed rounds. It wasn’t until 2008 that Musk became a member of the company’s board. Later, he was promoted to general managerbut not before he and Eberhard engage in a contentious power struggle.
Eberhard had also taken legal action, arguing that Musk was not one of the founders of Tesla. In September 2009, an amicable agreement was reached, grateful MuskStraubel and Wright as the founders of the company.
Does the logo depict a cat’s nose?
Musk confided to RO Studio the task of designing a logo for Tesla Motors shortly after making his initial investment in the company. The SpaceX logo work was done by the same company, RO Studio, which also did the work.
RO Studio devised a method analogous to the work it had done for SpaceX to respond to the necessity of electric motors in electric vehicles. The design company took a cross-sectional view of an electric motor pole and stylized it into a simple yet effective design element resembling the letter T. In a post on TwitterMusk provided additional evidence to support this version.
It goes without saying that the symbol suited the whole concept perfectly and effectively conveyed unwavering commitment of the company in favor of the advancement of electric mobility. In addition to the stylized letter T, the logo features a curved area above the letter which represents the space between the rotor and the stator of the motor.
At the beginning, the stylized T and Tesla text were contained behind a shield, much like Ferrari and Lamborghini crests do today. The protected version was standard on all Roadsters at one time, but over time, it has been replaced by a much simpler variant.
It’s impossible to forget this connection once you become aware of it, although the meaning of the Tesla logo may not be obvious at first glance. While red is used as the brand color in the Tesla logo design for communication purposes, the color changes to silver when the logo is used on Tesla vehicles. Since the removal of the shield, the overall style of the logo has taken on a more modern and sleekerplacing greater emphasis on technology, simplicity and protection.
We were able to explain the main concepts that led to the development of the Tesla logo. You can now understand that it is not a cat’s nose that inspired the Tesla logo but we find the photo of this adorable cat. Not you?
